<br />
Now in it's 5th year, the global phenomenon that is <b><a href="http://secret-7.com/">Secret 7</a></b> returned to showcase 700 unique record sleeves and raise a whole bunch of money for <b>Amnesty International UK</b>.<br />
<br />
This year things were arranged a little differently with a month long exhibition taking place at Sonos Studio in Shoreditch to whet the appetites of the vinyl-crazed public ahead of the sale, which took place on Monday 2nd May 2016.<br />
<br />
As ever there was a cool mix of bands and artists assembled by Kevin King (thanks for having me back) to choose from, including The Jam, Chvrches, Jack Garratt, Tame Impala, Etta James and John Lennon. The track that immediately stood out to me was the gorgeous '<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwpWZVG5SsQ">Dream 3</a>' by <b>Max Richter</b>; an artist I'd long admired and whose album 'The Blue Notebooks' is simply one of the most sublime records I've ever heard.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1nqcAA3PK9Q/VytqkHZU1BI/AAAAAAAACVw/ys7vcu8-bkw7YUKAevSsQPRUcrYVSN8bACLcB/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1nqcAA3PK9Q/VytqkHZU1BI/AAAAAAAACVw/ys7vcu8-bkw7YUKAevSsQPRUcrYVSN8bACLcB/s320/1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
When it came to designing artwork for the piece of music taken from an 8 hour "sleep aid", I wanted to make sure I captured that dream-like quality and made something which resonated with the aesthetic of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_(Max_Richter_album)">existing album artwork</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zF1oOhmJcrc/VytqwQMGFUI/AAAAAAAACV0/_cCpVqzoU90iNenKGNTRNsJt0lRKHkUCgCLcB/s1600/2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zF1oOhmJcrc/VytqwQMGFUI/AAAAAAAACV0/_cCpVqzoU90iNenKGNTRNsJt0lRKHkUCgCLcB/s320/2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I started with the idea of duplicating a moon image, which whilst creating a hypnotic effect much in the tradition of Richter's music, also conjured up ideas of dreams within dreams. It was all getting a bit too <i>Inception</i>-like but I thought the idea was strong enough to run with...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rg_UOlRE8_E/VytrVxFlrfI/AAAAAAAACV8/WhuQMSB4I2ks_i4nwUCwdcM-AWGwagdHQCLcB/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rg_UOlRE8_E/VytrVxFlrfI/AAAAAAAACV8/WhuQMSB4I2ks_i4nwUCwdcM-AWGwagdHQCLcB/s320/3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
And so I ended up sketching the idea to give it an organic feel, hoping to reflect the nature of Richter's music. Although liking the outcome, to me it didn't evoke the mood or atmosphere of the track. This is something that needed to have depth and the sketch just felt too 1 dimensional.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5PkcGTawyUs/Vytr7YzX9lI/AAAAAAAACWE/kk2xoWntQ64nnAkeCotUXeSC6n_j50rAQCLcB/s1600/4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5PkcGTawyUs/Vytr7YzX9lI/AAAAAAAACWE/kk2xoWntQ64nnAkeCotUXeSC6n_j50rAQCLcB/s320/4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To develop the idea of repeated patterns I decided to experiment with the concept of sleep as part of the cyclical nature of human existence and that we all have patterns that we replay - our daily routine. Of course we sleep, eat, work and play (if we're lucky) on a daily basis. This is echoed throughout the week, month, year, our entire lifespan and it was interesting to explore the idea that although this sounds repetitive and mundane, in fact it's the small joys we bring to ourselves on a daily basis which gives our lives variety and meaning, and that is something to be celebrated!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0p89OuH7bGg/VyttvBzsqsI/AAAAAAAACWQ/6bIjpii7sjo15YxbiOmQkyAtGIysj10YACLcB/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="319" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0p89OuH7bGg/VyttvBzsqsI/AAAAAAAACWQ/6bIjpii7sjo15YxbiOmQkyAtGIysj10YACLcB/s320/5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
In an attempt to capture that idea (and in keeping with the minimalist nature of the music) I set about painting ink onto a rotating piece of paper, which I prepared on my turntable. There were many attempts (as the above image shows - plus many more were discarded) before I found the perfect representation of my concept.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-11YNAToV6I8/Vytuk6jVToI/AAAAAAAACWc/9xLKlflgk4oEOoUpTsUkNx6DPaOfj8upACLcB/s1600/6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-11YNAToV6I8/Vytuk6jVToI/AAAAAAAACWc/9xLKlflgk4oEOoUpTsUkNx6DPaOfj8upACLcB/s320/6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The image was mounted on an inked gradient and then mounted on the blank record sleeve.<br />
<br />
So there you have it! A little bit of an insight into the thought process and execution behind my creation and a bit of fanboy gushing for Max - which seriously, if you haven't heard 'The Blue Notebooks', then go do that right now! Oh, and if you brought my contribution to this fantastic cause, then thank you. I hope you like it.Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-31103647770194999052016-02-03T13:58:00.000+00:002016-02-03T13:58:13.161+00:00Go Forth & Print<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">On the last weekend of January 2016, myself and Graham '<a href="http://armyofcats.com/">Army of Cats</a>' Pilling returned to deliver our biannual '<b>Screen-Printed Posters</b>' course at <a href="http://www.wypw.org/">West Yorkshire Print Workshop</a>.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As always it was great to hang out with Graham and of course meet the 6 students, upon whom we would dispel the myths of screen-printing, teach them some new tricks and generally have a bit of fun across the two day course.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The course is designed to give absolutely anybody a basic introduction to the skills and techniques required for screen-printing. Across the first day, the students are taught how to prepare a screen and then print a two-colour poster, which they are able to take home at the end of the weekend - a kind of certificate if you will.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So if that's whet your appetite for the more physical process of printing, then Graham and myself will be returning to WYPW across the weekend of 25th and 26th of June 2016 for another instalment of '<b>Screen-Printed Posters</b>', which you can <a href="http://www.wypw.org/shop/screen-printed-posters-june/">book here</a>. <br />
On <b>19th April 2014</b> the needle was dropped into the groove of internationally celebrated <b>Record Store Day</b> for another dose of limited edition vinyl and musical merriment!<br />
<br />
Again I was asked by the impassioned overlord of <a href="http://www.secret-7.com/"><b>Secret 7</b></a> Mr. <b>Kevin King</b> to contribute a one-off record sleeve to be sold on the big day.<br />
<br />
The charity this year was <b>War Child</b> and an almighty <b>£41,500</b> was raised for the cause. This was great news and it brought the total <b>Secret 7</b> contribution to over <b>£105,000</b>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I chose to illustrate 'Age of Reason' (track above) for Brummy metal newcomers <b><a href="http://www.blacksabbath.com/">Black Sabbath</a></b> and went down a more graphic-vector route, hoping to offer something different for the lads!<br />
<br />
I also screen-printed the cover, to give it that va-va voom. Below is the final design and then the process.<br />

In fact, we first bonded over our love for the medium and Graham was the printing Overlord who showed me the righteous path and I have never once looked back.
<br />
<br />
Since <b>2011</b>, we have kindly been asked back on a twice yearly basis by the <a href="http://www.wypw.org/"><b>West Yorkshire Print Workshop</b></a> to run a screen-printing workshop based around the printed poster.
<br />

<br />
Every session has been highly sought after and sold out <b><i>way </i></b>in advance - must have something to do with the charming host<i>s...</i> And every workshop has been a great deal of fun for myself and Graham, as well as all the students who graduate (with honours) into the wide world of screen-printing.<br />

Here is a quick overview from this years event, which took place on the schizophrenic weather weekend of the 8th and 9th of February.
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H7rIYaBf0fs/Uw4zeADNT0I/AAAAAAAACE8/37GQ3rkQy0E/s1600/_MG_2040_edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-H7rIYaBf0fs/Uw4zeADNT0I/AAAAAAAACE8/37GQ3rkQy0E/s400/_MG_2040_edit.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
The first day of the workshop gives learners the skills and know-how of how to print. And so every student is given the opportunity to screen-print their own certificate (shown below) as designed by Graham.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MinbDrO8jQs/UxYIkNr3_8I/AAAAAAAACFg/G194kzteLAk/s1600/_MG_2058_edit.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-MinbDrO8jQs/UxYIkNr3_8I/AAAAAAAACFg/G194kzteLAk/s1600/_MG_2058_edit.jpg" height="400" width="294" /></a></div>
<br />
The second day is dedicated to the printing of each student's designs and everybody gets the opportunity to print their own 2-colour design to take home. Don't worry, we're here to help throughout this process...<br />
<br />
<div style="orphans: 3; widows: 3;">
There will no doubt be another workshop this year, although it hasn't been announced yet. If you think this is something you'd fancy - and let's face it, of course it is - then feel free to drop <b>West Yorkshire Print Worskhop</b> a line at 01924 497646 or<span style="color: #4c4c4c; font-family: Lato, sans-serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22.652000427246094px;"> </span></span>email @wypw.org and they'll be happy to help you out.</div>

<p>
Well, that alongside 699 other individually crafted record sleeves raised over £30,000 for the Art Against Knives charity! Here's a little video from the day.

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/v8gjv4XgZV4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</p><p>
As well as contributing a print for Laura Marling, I also designed a cover for another band involved with the project, Public Enemy. A band of whom I am very fond of, having seen them live in Nottingham when I was 18 years old.

Above is the front cover of the design, which was digitally printed for the exhibition.

Thanks again to Kevin for asking me to be a part of the show. It's always great to know that you can make a little difference to a big cause!

<p>
What a wonderful American band. Having just released their sixth studio album 'Trouble Will Find Me' I find myself constantly in discussion with friends and family about just how great this band are.
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Cz1wuOWO5Fg/UacX_GYN0YI/AAAAAAAABYw/2nT3ZeHnYO8/s1600/IMG_20130521_184245.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Cz1wuOWO5Fg/UacX_GYN0YI/AAAAAAAABYw/2nT3ZeHnYO8/s320/IMG_20130521_184245.jpg" /></a>
</div>
</p><p>
After purchasing the album last week I have listened to it every day. It is beautiful, sombre, restrained, complex, melodic and a whole host of other adjectives fans would adopt to articulate their praise and love for the NY five piece.
<br />
</p><p>
Early highlights include 'Fireproof', 'I Should Live in Salt' and 'I Need My Girl', the latter of which I have decided to artistically interpret using magazine cut-outs, acrylic paint and colour-transparent overlays.
<br />

Not sure whether to sell the piece yet, if there's any interest then I'll put it up in the <a href="http://www.twoducksdisco.bigcartel.com/">twoducksdisco Big Cartel shop</a>. Or email me at twoducksdisco@gmail.com

If you haven't heard the album yet, I suggest you do so. Here's a live version of 'I Need My Girl'. Enjoy.

<p>
If you don't know, Secret 7 involves 700 artists/designers being given a blank sleeve each. The artist picks a song from a list of 7 bands/musicians, which they can illustrate in any way they see fit. Each 7" sleeve (including vinyl) is sold for £40, every penny of which goes to <a href="http://www.artagainstknives.com/">Art Against Knives</a>.
</p><p>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div style="text-align: left;">
I picked to illustrate 'The Beast' by <a href="http://www.lauramarling.com/">Laura Marling</a> using the print-making technique, linocut; a process which I felt suited Laura's traditional-folk style.

Here's hoping that last year's £33,500 was topped!Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-65372474388663599102012-08-03T15:10:00.001+01:002012-08-03T15:10:56.175+01:00No Direction HomeDue to the success of the <a href="http://www.endoftheroadfestival.com/">End of the Road festival</a> (an annual music event which leans more towards the contemporary folk end of the spectrum) the organisers saw fit to create a new summer attraction in the shape of <a href="http://www.nodirectionhomefestival.com/">No Direction Home</a>.
<p>
Musically, the festival takes cues from the folk and Americana revivalist scene, this small festival (set in the grounds of Welbeck Abbey, Nottinghamshire) attempts to bring a wealth of activities and music to a family orientated weekend.
</p><p>
<iframe src="http://player.vimeo.com/video/41276737" width="500" height="281" frameborder="0" webkitAllowFullScreen mozallowfullscreen allowFullScreen></iframe> <p><a href="http://vimeo.com/41276737">No Direction Home Festival</a> from <a href="http://vimeo.com/user2520764">End of the Road Films</a> on <a href="http://vimeo.com">Vimeo</a>.</p>
</p><p>
I was kindly selected by the organisers to design and screen-print a poster for the event and having already seen the lineup (including favourites of mine; The Low Anthem, Dirty Three and Lanterns on the Lake) I was more than happy to contribute a print which would be sold at the festival and online afterwards.
</p><p>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RucmcF6NPBc/T9Nnd6Jce3I/AAAAAAAABMA/LpMMAkPuZNE/s1600/01-NDH-Poster.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RucmcF6NPBc/T9Nnd6Jce3I/AAAAAAAABMA/LpMMAkPuZNE/s400/01-NDH-Poster.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
After a lot of false starts with the design, I settled on the above image which works as a collage of activities that will be taking place at the festival. The birds were mainly included as a reference to the festival's design aesthetic and also, birds are cool!
</p><p>
Here is an initial concept draft for the final poster and you can see the light grey circle, which I used as a template to keep all the elements in order.
</p><p>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_DEY9ZxwWFM/T9N2g47QJeI/AAAAAAAABPs/sh-pNJdY6oU/s1600/00-Idea.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_DEY9ZxwWFM/T9N2g47QJeI/AAAAAAAABPs/sh-pNJdY6oU/s400/00-Idea.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
Here are the 3 transparencies for the screen-print, which were printed off in small sections and then assembled using tape. This made the process feel much more hands on and organic.
</p><p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AdaPm8DlXc8/T9NngASR-iI/AAAAAAAABMw/NcPIOa4qr9I/s1600/06.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AdaPm8DlXc8/T9NngASR-iI/AAAAAAAABMw/NcPIOa4qr9I/s400/06.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
Here is the first screen with the images burnt onto the mesh.
</p><p>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F4iu2k8XsBg/T9NneZU2XQI/AAAAAAAABMM/GCrl9wCHz_w/s1600/02.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-F4iu2k8XsBg/T9NneZU2XQI/AAAAAAAABMM/GCrl9wCHz_w/s400/02.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
The pink / red paint is pulled over the mesh using a squeegee, pressing the ink through onto the paper below.
</p><p>

</p><p>
And here is the first colour on the paper.

</p><p>
The second screen is locked in place and the process is repeated.
</p><p>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ODQad2GiGKE/T9NrTDicobI/AAAAAAAABNk/oWuVb9AXYgE/s1600/07.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ODQad2GiGKE/T9NrTDicobI/AAAAAAAABNk/oWuVb9AXYgE/s400/07.gif" /></a>

</p><p>
A photo from underneath the screen.
</p><p>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tkNOvSfwmvc/T9NrUs_FyQI/AAAAAAAABOI/UWkQB75z_OA/s1600/10.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tkNOvSfwmvc/T9NrUs_FyQI/AAAAAAAABOI/UWkQB75z_OA/s400/10.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
In this picture, you can see two pieces of paper where the top left corner of the poster is. This is for registration purposes and ensures that every time I put the paper down on the screen-bed I know that when the second colour is 'pulled' it will line up perfectly with the first colour.
</p><p>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pl2Dysv3Ho0/T9NrTsna0KI/AAAAAAAABNw/YQID67XRfLs/s1600/08.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pl2Dysv3Ho0/T9NrTsna0KI/AAAAAAAABNw/YQID67XRfLs/s400/08.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
Onto the third and final screen. Here is a picture of the screen, locked in the bed.
</p><p>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-myWWo9StV8U/T9NtNQOL8XI/AAAAAAAABOg/a9AfSf3rxjg/s1600/12.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-myWWo9StV8U/T9NtNQOL8XI/AAAAAAAABOg/a9AfSf3rxjg/s400/12.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
The third colour has now been 'pulled' through the mesh and the paint is transferred onto the paper. And by the looks of things, it's looking good.
</p><p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwLL9242qdU/T9NtN4S-vxI/AAAAAAAABOs/mj4DV-ITRBo/s1600/13.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-hwLL9242qdU/T9NtN4S-vxI/AAAAAAAABOs/mj4DV-ITRBo/s400/13.gif" /></a>
</p><p>
Here are the posters, drying on the racks waiting to be cropped and then signed and numbered.

Here is the final poster, which has been cropped to fit perfectly in a square frame from the Ikea '<a href="http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/00161856/#/00161856">Ribba</a>' series. I considered this when designing the poster, that people would like something that they could frame cheaply and easily.

I hope thats given you an insight into how the poster was designed and printed. In addition to this process blog, I thought it would be insightful to include a small essay which was sent to me by a very talented freelance writer named Janine Redding, detailing the history of screen-printing.
</p><p>
<u><b>Screen Printing: A Brief History</b></u>
</p><p>
Whilst some members of the artistic community that are deeply involved with screen printing will be the first to swear that it is a “timeless” method of producing art/copies/what have you, there might equally be those that would be surprised to learn that – at least as far as the overall process of printing goes – screen-printing is a *relatively* young concept, having really only been popularised to a great extent in the last hundred years or so.
</p><p>
An interesting point to mention would be that screen printing as a whole has remained relatively faithful to the original/early technology that was employed since day one, chiefly the woven mesh/stencil tech. Naturally, certainly aspects have changed with time (a good example being the move from silk mesh to polyester), but screen printing has by and large remained delightfully free of the awkward need for the biggest monitors, fastest CPUs, the best broadband technology race that has so effected other areas of artistry (or indeed that has permeated life in general).
</p><p>
<b>The First Appearance – Traversing the Globe</b>
</p><p>
Technically, screen printing’s actual first appearance in the history books would have been way back around the time of China’s Song Dynasty (960-1279 AD), in which it was scant more than a variation on a stencilling technique. Of course, this method flourished all over Asia and improved as the centuries rolled by; however, it wasn’t until around five hundred years later that it found its way to Europe/the West via trade routes and travellers.
</p><p>
Yet even at this proverbially late stage in the game, screen printing was still yet to take off in Europe, largely due to the fact that the requisite silk mesh was hard to come by, due to the limited number of them available by trade. This would have in turn driven up the price of the aforementioned screens, so a more profitable use for the process needed to be found – or even just a barely profitable usage, seeing as how screen printing was a fairly novel technology at the time, with not many commercial uses (in Europe, at least) found for it yet.
</p><p>
<b>Widespread Use</b>
</p><p>
Fast-forward to the early 20th century, where photography, printers, and photo-reactive chemical processes were all the rage. A trio of developers (Charles Peter, Roy Beck, and Edward Owens) would be largely responsible for furthering the commercial use (or at least the idea that it could be used commercially) of screen printing, via their experimentation with various chemicals to produce photo-reactive stencils (a method/idea which would – even then – take some time to find acceptance amongst the community), albeit these chemicals would prove to be somewhat toxic and dangerous, a problem which has – fortunately – been resolved for a good while now.
</p><p>
The 1930s would see the founding of the National Serigraphic Society (“seri” from the Latin for “silk”, a reference to the mesh used in the process) and screen printing was a veritable force in motion for both artistic communities and with great industrial printing applications.
</p><p>
<b>Recent History and Pop Culture</b>
</p><p>
An early adopter of the screen-printing-as-art philosophy was American artist and pop-culture icon Andy Warhol, particularly the numerous images of a screen-printed Marilyn Monroe. This rise and subsequent popularity of the both the artist Warhol and the screen printing method he employed would see a boom befall the screen printing industry and one that would continue on apace and is still a viable avenue of artistry to this day.
</p><p>
Arguably, perhaps one of the chief reasons that screen printing was and has remained such a popular mode of art, is because the materials required for basic screen printing are relatively cheap and easily available these days. Thanks in part to this, screen printing has become iconic, with its “non-professional” guise and seeming simplicity and has seen it grace everything from posters, to album covers, to shirts, to everywhere. Its prevalence is such that the Printers’ National Environmental Assistance Center has stated that screen printing is perhaps the “most versatile of all printing processes”.
</p><p>
If past advancements and recent years/decades are any indication, then screen printing and the implications it may have (particularly as a medium for art) can only see further improvement and increased interest – no doubt culminating in many an intriguing work of art for many moons to come.Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-31518110644880983872012-07-24T10:13:00.000+01:002012-07-24T10:13:58.967+01:00Go Forth and PrintDue to popular demand following last year's workshop that Graham '<a href="http://www.armyofcats.com/">Army of Cats</a>' Pilling and I ran, we returned to the West Yorkshire Print Workshop to conduct another course based on the screen-printed gig poster.
<p>
The course took place over two consecutive days at the <a href="http://www.wypw.org/">WYPW</a> in Mirfield and included details on how to best design for the screen-printing medium, tips on specific printing techniques and industry knowledge and experience about working in the screen-printing field.

</p><p>
The six patrons who attended got to print a poster (designed by Graham - as modelled by me above) on the first day and learn about the process. Day two involved the attendees printing their own designs which they brought and with mine and Graham's help, were able to develop into an appropriate print. This would then be printed across the day and the results available to take home.
</p><p>
I was able to document the first day of the course, which involved the teachings of the process and hands on practise for all those who attended.

Here is Graham, debriefing the students whilst discussing the science of effective paint mixing.

<p>
The project was to feature 700 unique 7" record sleeves, interpreted by 700 artist's with an aim to 'rekindle some of the excitement for vinyl sleeve art in the digital era'. These were then to be exhibited at the Idea Generation Gallery in London and sold with 100% of the profits given to the TCT charity.

</p><p>
From the list of tracks available I picked 'Black Flies' by <a href="http://www.benhowardmusic.co.uk/">Ben Howard</a>, whose debut album 'Every Kingdom' gets played quite a bit in my office.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</p><p>
Since the purpose of this project was create a one-off artwork, I decided to take a different approach to the design process. I selected various elements from previous designs I had created, not knowing if they would work together as a single composition. I did of course, resize them all to fit on a 7" sleeve, so I wasn't going in totally blind.
</p><p>
I decided to create an environment for the design, using screen-printing and here are the transparencies for the print.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

A layer of light sensitive emulsion is applied to the screen and then the images are transferred to the screen using UV light. Here are all four layers of the print on one screen.

</p><p>
Using the same orange, I printed the titles on the reverse of the sleeve.
</p><p>

</p><p>
Now here comes the tricky part. I wanted to create a 3D layered artwork, so I cut out a window frame shape from a piece of mount board. I then used my trusty Pentel pocket brush to illustrate a wood effect for the frame.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hvxntjsKRU0/T5q34iCPC6I/AAAAAAAABKQ/PsmQLEy6x-Y/s1600/10-Window.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hvxntjsKRU0/T5q34iCPC6I/AAAAAAAABKQ/PsmQLEy6x-Y/s400/10-Window.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
I then painted the window frame using a selection of acrylics, and never applying the paint too thick, so as to allow the illustrated wood effect to show through. I also printed a few flies onto acetate, which were affixed to the frame.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGfuiLi7ZbU/T5q-Pl-lhVI/AAAAAAAABKs/EPBHmm9HraE/s1600/11-Window.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZGfuiLi7ZbU/T5q-Pl-lhVI/AAAAAAAABKs/EPBHmm9HraE/s400/11-Window.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
Here is a picture of the screen-printed sleeve, awaiting the frame to be put in place.

</p><p>
All in all, this was a fun project to work on; going into production of a final piece and not really knowing how it would turn out was a pretty daunting experience but I'm really happy with the results.
</p><p>
It was also fun to combine my love of screen-printing with a different, crafty approach. Hopefully the owner of the sleeve is enjoying it as much as I did putting it together.

<p>
The first of which being Poster Roast as part of Camden Crawl.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AlVLx3b1Qws/T5khEgQUiLI/AAAAAAAABIQ/qEh_8AB01q4/s1600/CRAWL1.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="64" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AlVLx3b1Qws/T5khEgQUiLI/AAAAAAAABIQ/qEh_8AB01q4/s400/CRAWL1.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
With a bit of a twist this year, Poster Roast will be host alongside Alternative Press and Lexington Record Fair, making it quite a DIY day out in the heart of Camden.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hzw-a-fNZCg/T5kbLhgGJJI/AAAAAAAABHo/7V28ITX9KS0/s1600/CAME.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="165" width="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hzw-a-fNZCg/T5kbLhgGJJI/AAAAAAAABHo/7V28ITX9KS0/s400/CAME.gif" /></a></div>
It's all free to get in and more information on the three day event can be found <a href="http://www.thecamdencrawl.com/news/article/camden-crawl-announces-first-ever-crawlternative-media-expo">here</a> and it promises to be an exciting venture.
</p><p>
The following week comes the debut UK poster show by the <a href="http://ukposterart.com/">UKPA</a>, which will feature both UK and US artists, again taking place in London.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HgZ6YJk2SO4/T5kbMc9JVxI/AAAAAAAABH0/tuTF0h28rQ4/s1600/INK.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="282" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HgZ6YJk2SO4/T5kbMc9JVxI/AAAAAAAABH0/tuTF0h28rQ4/s400/INK.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
This event will act as more of a gallery show than an expo, with posters having their own space and will be available to purchase at the event.
</p><p>
There will also be a series of discussions, debates and a Q&A on the Sunday from 4pm featuring ramblings from a bunch of talented friends including Graham 'Army of Cats' Pilling, Drew Millward, John Howard and Lil Tuffy. There are plans in place for these talks to be filmed, to further spread the knowledge of these illustration disciples.
</p><p>
The following week will see the return of Screenadelica as part of the huge annual event, Liverpool Sound City.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h4K41dEgmhA/T5kbMy3-lYI/AAAAAAAABIA/0XmCVp0DHyU/s1600/SCREEN.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="283" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h4K41dEgmhA/T5kbMy3-lYI/AAAAAAAABIA/0XmCVp0DHyU/s400/SCREEN.gif" /></a></div>
LSC is an international music, media and technology conference and live arts and music festival, which started life in SXSW a few years back.
</p><p>
This will be my first year exhibiting my wares at Screenadelica and I hope to make it over there for the Saturday. More information on this year's event can be found on <a href="http://www.screenadelica.com/">their website</a>.Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-19326274000918883872012-04-23T09:15:00.000+01:002012-04-23T10:51:16.523+01:00Scottish WindsI was recently asked by Frightened Rabbit to design a tour poster for their Highlands Tour, in which they played intimate venues in small Scottish towns.

I love the thought of a band on a major label making such an effort to play to their fans who might not be able to get to their shows, which often take place in the major cities of Scotland.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4O2GS3D3HtI/T5J8fT3kNBI/AAAAAAAABF4/N7XWk9ww2F4/s1600/FRABBIT-HIRES.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="283" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-4O2GS3D3HtI/T5J8fT3kNBI/AAAAAAAABF4/N7XWk9ww2F4/s400/FRABBIT-HIRES.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
People who know me will know that I'm quite fond of FR; I consider their second album 'The Midnight Organ Fight' to be a genuine modern classic. So when it came to inspiration, I had a lot of ideas at the ready.
</p><p>
Firstly I wanted to have references to their lyrics and themes tackled across their albums; the sea, isolation, faith and lack thereof and combine it with the idea of the band heading up into the unknown wilderness to play these shows.
</p><p>
Here is a quick printing process of the day I spent screen-printing them.
</p><p>
Firstly, the screens are coated with a chemical called Azocol.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BNAEhix5M-U/T5KFMVn06hI/AAAAAAAABGQ/jj0N6lQS_uw/s1600/1-Screen.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-BNAEhix5M-U/T5KFMVn06hI/AAAAAAAABGQ/jj0N6lQS_uw/s400/1-Screen.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
Here are the transparencies, which will make up the two layers / colours of the poster.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goNF6CmjQPg/T5KFMwELTRI/AAAAAAAABGc/rZekaVwV2UA/s1600/2-Acetates.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="272" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-goNF6CmjQPg/T5KFMwELTRI/AAAAAAAABGc/rZekaVwV2UA/s400/2-Acetates.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
They are transferred to the screens, using UV light.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YrwOF1mRWm0/T5KFNSB4yCI/AAAAAAAABGo/dDjYBbyFz6w/s1600/3-Screen.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="400" width="300" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YrwOF1mRWm0/T5KFNSB4yCI/AAAAAAAABGo/dDjYBbyFz6w/s400/3-Screen.gif" /></a></div>
</p><p>
The screen is then clamped into the bed place and the first colour has been pulled through with a squeegee.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6eoZQHiI24/T5KFN_tWxmI/AAAAAAAABG0/iAGFjbcUFyo/s1600/4-Mint.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left:1em; margin-right:1em"><img border="0" height="300" width="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H6eoZQHiI24/T5KFN_tWxmI/AAAAAAAABG0/iAGFjbcUFyo/s400/4-Mint.gif" /></a></div>

</p><p>
The second screen in place, with the imminent brown to complete the print.
</p><p>

</p><p>
Here is the final cropped version of the poster, which I think came out pretty well.
</p><p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</p><p>
I printed 130 in total, 100 for the band and 30 for me. They're now <a href="http://twoducksdisco.bigcartel.com/product/frightened-rabbit-poster">available in my online shop</a> and if you want one, then get to it, as I understand they were pretty popular on the tour. Also, for one week only I'm offering free p&p within the UK.
</p><p>
Big thanks to the band and their management for letting me do these and also to Alice Munks, who helped get the ball rolling with the band about 18 months ago...Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-85115678162473558812012-04-18T18:17:00.008+01:002012-04-19T12:43:28.344+01:00Flatstock 33About a month ago I was privileged enough to travel to Austin, Texas to exhibit at Flatstock 33, which runs alongside the world famous music festival, SXSW.
<p>
Flatstock is a gig poster event run by the API, as a means of showcasing the work of the gig poster artist in a series of exhibitions.
</p><p>
As a little promotional item for FS33, I designed an A5-sized postcard with a parrot on.
</p><p>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KdZ5_SI-DhE/T4747JZtcPI/AAAAAAAABE4/UlN8nGPlhLQ/s1600/A5-PHOTO.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-KdZ5_SI-DhE/T4747JZtcPI/AAAAAAAABE4/UlN8nGPlhLQ/s400/A5-PHOTO.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732793070708945138" /></a>
These were printed by Manchester-based <a href="http://www.marctheprinters.co.uk/">Marc the Printers</a> on their spot colour risograph. The process of which is not too dis-similar from screen-printing, where each colour is printed separately but using an actual printer.
</p><p>
Also, before heading out for the event, I was requested by the UK Trade & Investment to produce a poster design for a UK-based show taking place as part of SXSW and presented by Huw Stevens.
</p><p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tAVasVYDxj4/T4747wNjw_I/AAAAAAAABFE/UPYeIcfIR7k/s1600/HUW.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tAVasVYDxj4/T4747wNjw_I/AAAAAAAABFE/UPYeIcfIR7k/s400/HUW.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5732793081126962162" /></a>
Of course since Huw is Welsh I had to include a dragon and since SXSW is in Texas a BBQ was the next logical step. I bumped into Huw whilst out there and he approved and that was all I wanted...
</p><p>
I also got to visit the venue where Huw's showcase was going down and saw that my design had been adapted for a giant wall poster, which was nice.
</p><p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3qlg3CDLVQ/T4_38X4g7YI/AAAAAAAABFo/5YIyqR5qqCw/s1600/DRAG-MAN.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-A3qlg3CDLVQ/T4_38X4g7YI/AAAAAAAABFo/5YIyqR5qqCw/s400/DRAG-MAN.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733073467241196930" /></a>
So, onto the main event and here is a picture of me at the UKPA booth, standing before my wears.
</p><p>
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tvp_TnkvO_U/T4_35gNIzuI/AAAAAAAABFQ/PgesWcWFrls/s1600/2DD-STAND.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tvp_TnkvO_U/T4_35gNIzuI/AAAAAAAABFQ/PgesWcWFrls/s400/2DD-STAND.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733073417935572706" /></a>
And here is a picture of the threads that the UKPA had for sale too, featuring the old family favourite 'Cat Beard'.
</p><p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3_yfxi8sZbM/T4_36IxZqfI/AAAAAAAABFg/xE8kbvoJpaU/s1600/T-SHIRTS.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-3_yfxi8sZbM/T4_36IxZqfI/AAAAAAAABFg/xE8kbvoJpaU/s400/T-SHIRTS.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5733073428825090546" /></a>
And here is a long animated GIF of nearly all the artists who exhibited at Flatstock 33.
</p><p>
<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v236/Cam_Da_Boomb/?action=view&current=Flatstock-33-Animation-1.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/Cam_Da_Boomb/Flatstock-33-Animation-1.gif" border="0" alt="FS33 Animation"></a>
</p><p>
The whole experience was a real eye-opener for me, as a gig poster artist and a freelance illustrator. I was able to meet a lot of like-minded designers and hopefully managed to leave a little twoducksdisco shaped stamp on the world poster scene.
</p><p>
Huge thanks to the <a href="http://www.ukposterart.com">UKPA</a> and the UK Trade & Investment teams who helped provide me with funding for the event. Cheers to all the Brits for the support, whilst being out there. The Americans, Europeans (and one Canuck) who were very welcoming and kind. And finally a massive thanks to everybody who bought a poster / print / t-shirt from me - I know a few of you read this.Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-82458001599204460572012-04-12T18:54:00.015+01:002012-04-20T16:22:22.784+01:00The WoodsUpon returning from Flatstock 33, Austin a few weeks ago, I had an email from a band called Daughter, requesting a screen-printed poster for their sold out show at the Islington Assembly Hall in London.
<iframe width="100%" height="166" scrolling="no" frameborder="no" src="http://w.soundcloud.com/player/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F12985333&auto_play=false&show_artwork=false&color=de9283"></iframe>
After studying their output, I decided to base the poster on the song 'The Woods', which sets the scene of St. Christopher, searching for someone's sister in the woods. It was also important to create an environment which evoked the sparse textures used in Daughter's music. Oh, and they requested an exploding sun too!
<p>
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rE1PbLpeoUE/T4fddlQXabI/AAAAAAAABEc/h7pHOsRAigM/s1600/0-900-Poster.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-rE1PbLpeoUE/T4fddlQXabI/AAAAAAAABEc/h7pHOsRAigM/s400/0-900-Poster.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730792551138945458" /></a>
So, after the design was approved I quickly had to book a session at <a href="http://www.wypw.org/">WYPW</a> to get the posters printed in time for the show and here's how the day went.
</p><p>
Here are the separations on acetate for the printing process.
</p><p>
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4cNwr29dOSg/T4cXGv35IiI/AAAAAAAABCA/VwczZTIwgbQ/s1600/1-Acetates.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-4cNwr29dOSg/T4cXGv35IiI/AAAAAAAABCA/VwczZTIwgbQ/s400/1-Acetates.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5730574455549796898" /></a>
Here is the first screen with the image burnt on (using a variety of chemicals and UV light) and you can see the cream paint on the screen, which is being pulled through the mesh of the screen to print onto the paper underneath.

As always, I documented the print process with photographs. So here is a run through of how these posters were printed.
The acetates of the print, laid over one another. You can see where I had to cut and arrange certain aspects of the print, to ensure tight registration during the printing process.

I wanted to create something that complimented their hazy sounds and kept that element of mystery.

They also wanted to take the posters out on the road, as merchandise. So I screen-printed 60 posters for their weeks escapade up and down England and here are some photos from the print session.

So the band will have 50 posters with them for the tour and I will have 10 for my shop, which will go on sale from Wednesday 21st March (the day after I return from Flatstock 33 in Austin, Texas) - if I have any left of course.

More on Flatstock 33 in the next couple of days...Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-7061405700028841342011-12-01T09:15:00.004+00:002011-12-02T09:53:46.337+00:00Learned to SurfLast year, Superchunk released what has become one of my favourite ever records, 'Majesty Shredding'. When I learned they were coming to play their first show in the UK in 11 years I knew I had to be there. Sadly, I am now unable to see them due to a rescheduling of Jeff Mangum's ATP festival but I still managed to design a poster for their headline show at The Scala in London.
<p>
Since this is a poster I've dreamed of doing for about a year, the actual design concept fell together quite quickly. I basically wanted their mascot 'Tube Guy' riding some waves with a reluctant cat. Simple...
</p><p>
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TV7S0XV1hhQ/Ttc-ISVI8qI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/Q1IvVgY3d80/s1600/Superchunk-Poster.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-TV7S0XV1hhQ/Ttc-ISVI8qI/AAAAAAAAA7Y/Q1IvVgY3d80/s400/Superchunk-Poster.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681077767031550626" border="0" /></a>
Here is the original sketch and how it progressed to being the final design in Photoshop.
</p><p>

<a href="http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v236/Cam_Da_Boomb/?action=view&current=Superchunk-Animation-1.gif" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v236/Cam_Da_Boomb/Superchunk-Animation-1.gif" alt="Tube Surf Animation" border="0" /></a>

</p><p>
Without further ado, here is the print process for the Superchunk poster; starting with a picture of the transparencies, which are then 'burned' to the screens using chemicals and UV light.
</p><p>
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S0t0xWUaqdE/Ttc_tHitcjI/AAAAAAAAA7k/ATfrZ_1ZGIw/s1600/0-Acetate.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-S0t0xWUaqdE/Ttc_tHitcjI/AAAAAAAAA7k/ATfrZ_1ZGIw/s400/0-Acetate.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5681079499302466098" border="0" /></a>

The posters came out great in the end and I managed to produce a run of 62, 30 of which will on sale from the band at the show tonight.

I do of course have the remaining 32 for sale from <a href="http://twoducksdisco.bigcartel.com/product/superchunk-poster">my online store</a>. So if you want one, head over and grab one before they're all gone. They go 'live' at 10pm tonight!

So it was nice to be hired outside of the band (by Aim Low Promotions) to continue working with the post-rock troop.

<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zohsHUMJ0aI/Tp2ZMaMpI2I/AAAAAAAAA5Y/lPHcysJ9E7I/s1600/HNIC-Blog.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zohsHUMJ0aI/Tp2ZMaMpI2I/AAAAAAAAA5Y/lPHcysJ9E7I/s400/HNIC-Blog.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5664852344771781474" /></a>
I tried to continue the theme which I established in <a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-mOmPppyhrl0/TWTqhse1DhI/AAAAAAAAAuY/-XcHMpo2hyc/s1600/HNIC-Blog.gif">my previous poster for HNIC</a> by illustrating an atmospheric yet minimal scene. This design progresses from the Left Bank poster by uniting lovers and creating a romantic setting. Aww...

I have picked up some amazing vinyl from there over the years and am always appreciative of the helpful and friendly staff.
<p>
I got an email from <a href="http://www.ellenandtheescapades.com/">Ellen and the Escapades</a> last week, asking for a last minute poster design for their in-store performance as part of Jumbo Records' 40th Birthday celebrations, which also coincides with Ellen's last single release. Of course I jumped at the opportunity and came up with this little poster.

It all starts at midday this Saturday (22nd) and if you're in Leeds, you'd be daft to miss it. The specifications for the design were to include a stag and that was about it, so it was a fun project in which to interpret in my own style. I decided to develop the stag's antlers to create a constellation, adding a grand feel to the design - reflecting the grand sounds of the band.

</p><p>
Their debut LP 'Gracious Tide, Take Me Home' was used as the main theme for the designs and we decided to explore the themes of being lost at sea and trying to feel connected with a world in which we are not familiar with.
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-saaXz6P_eRk/TqFemj8HHnI/AAAAAAAAA5o/0lDMnUA76K4/s1600/LOTL-Tee.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 373px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-saaXz6P_eRk/TqFemj8HHnI/AAAAAAAAA5o/0lDMnUA76K4/s400/LOTL-Tee.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5665913822784200306" /></a>
You can see the full range in their <a href="http://lanternsonthelake.bigcartel.com/products">Big Cartel store</a>, as well as a poster of the same design. Hopefully we'll be able to reveal more designs as and when they are printed but rest assured, there is more to come.

They're about to go on tour around the UK with Yann Tiersen and then do their own UK jaunt, as well as a trip around Europe, so if you go out to see them, then do be sure to pick up some new threads to keep you warm in these cold months.Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6744132395602960574.post-79341259086928272442011-07-06T07:28:00.006+01:002011-07-06T09:16:18.579+01:00Trouble and StrifeHere are some pictures from the second exhibition I was involved in this weekend past.

The reason; my debut solo poster exhibition, which also featured collages by <a href="http://grahamhutchinson.blogspot.com/">Graham Hutchinson</a>.

On the Friday launch, there was music from Algiers and Ankles, both of whom were awesome, so thanks lads! Also, thanks to all those who came down and chatted, I had a reet good time.

Here is a video of Algiers performing their hit single; 'Four Priests', Directed by <a href="http://vimeo.com/inthewoods">Darren 'In the Woods' Topliss</a>.

<p>
The first being 'The debut solo poster exhibition by twoducksdisco', which will be happening in Middlesbrough at the Pop-Up Gallery.

It all kicks off at 7:30, Friday night and will have some special guest bands in the shape of <a href="http://soundcloud.com/wearealgiers">Algiers</a> and Ankles. I will also be there in person giving mini-seminars about screen-printing and the life & times of a poster artist. Plus i'll have stuff for sale, so bring your monies!
Here's a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=118832198205312&ref=ts">Facebook event</a> for it.
</p><p>
Secondly, I am also contributing a few screen-prints to 'Parkstrife'; an exhibition in the Sno!Lounge at Sno!Zone, Milton Keynes. Yes, you read that correctly, Sno!Zone.
</p><p>
This will be more a permanent exhibition for the lounge, where functions and other such events are held. There's a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=152578094813800">Facebook event</a> for that too. Plus, <a href="http://www.jibberjabberblog.co.uk/content/Two-Duck-Disco-at-Parkstrife/4535">a little interview</a> that I did with Jibber Jabber; a snow sports blog at Sno!Zone.

<p>
Apparently they'd be trying to book American folk singer Willy Mason for quite some time, so I wanted to create something special to mark the occasion for them.
</p><p>
<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2sb5FbBIc5E/Tfx0MhFCKII/AAAAAAAAA1A/54byB5PQQjY/s1600/Willy-Mason-Poster.gif"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 283px; height: 400px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2sb5FbBIc5E/Tfx0MhFCKII/AAAAAAAAA1A/54byB5PQQjY/s400/Willy-Mason-Poster.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5619494193438271618" /></a>
Willy's first album feels like an extensive road trip on foot, so I wanted to create a triptych-style story board depicting his journey across Americana.
</p><p>
I know the H&S lads were pleased with it, so hopefully Willy is too...Cameron Stewardhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10524195745698105891noreply@blogger.com0
